In 1917 the Illinois state legislature passed a law allowing students not residing in a high school district could pick the high school of their choice as reported on page 2 of the August 18, 1917 issue of The True Republican. As a result, rural school students had their choice of which high school they wished to attend. Browne school students most likely chose the high school closest to their residence, which in this case would have been Malta High School located a few miles north.
