The Browne School Teachers - 1917/1919: Gladys Mosher

Gladys Mosher taught at the Browne school during the 1917 - 1918 and 1918 - 1919 school terms, following the 3 school terms for Hazel Fitzgerald.

Gladys Ava Mosher was born April 11, 1895 in DeKalb county, Illinois to Carrie Melvina (DeForest) and Grant Edwin Mosher.    Gladys was the cousin of Ethel Mosher who taught at the Browne school during the 1908 - 1909 school session.

The 1900 US Census lists Gladys living (lines 91 - 99) in Afton township, DeKalb county, Illinois with her parents and siblings, Gertrude, Belle, Harold, Mildred and Wylda.

The 1910 US Census lists Gladys still living (lines 5 - 12) in Afton township with her parents and siblings Belle, Harry (Harold), Mildred, Wylda and Eugene.

Page 3 of the August 2, 1918 edition of The DeKalb Daily Chronicle announced the impending marriage of Gladys to Stanley Roy Concidine.   The marriage would take place that evening in Fort Still, Oklahoma where Stanley was preparing for combat due to World War I.

The announcement also reported that Gladys will return to teaching in September.    It would be the last school year Gladys taught at the Browne school and possibly her last teaching position.

Below is a copy of the Comanche county, Oklahoma marriage record confirming the marriage between Gladys Ava Mosher and Stanley Roy Concidine on August 3, 1918.   The train must have been late.

The 1920 US Census lists Gladys living (lines 23 - 24) with her husband Roy in DeKalb, DeKalb township, DeKalb county, Illinois.    Gladys is listed as not being employed, which was common among female teachers after they married.

The 1930 US Census lists Gladys having moved back to Afton township in DeKalb county, Illinois living (lines 23 - 27) with her husband, Roy and their 3 children, Eugene, Carrie and Donald.

The 1940 US Census lists Gladys still living in Afton township living (1B, lines 78 - 80 and
2A, lines 1 - 2) with her children Dennis, Carrie Ann, Donald and Sylvia.    Gladys was listed as a widow, her husband Stanley Roy Concidine having passed away the previous year.

Gladys Ava (Mosher) Concidine passed away May 24, 1963.   Her memorial can be viewed here.

  1. Thank you so much for this post! Stanley was the younger brother of one of my paternal great-grandmothers, Nellie May (Concidine) Holst.

You can read more about my Concidine ancestors at my blog, AnceStories: The Stories of My Ancestors.
